3 Reasons To Build With Wood Vs. Steel

When you think about building things, you might think about doing so with wood. However, over the years, steel and other types of metal have become much more popular. You might have noticed that steel is being used for building all sorts of items and buildings, and you could be wondering if it's now the best choice. It's true that metal has its benefits, but this does not mean that it's better than wood in every way. For these three reasons, you may still find wood to be the best building material to use.

1. It Has a More Traditional Look

One thing that you might love about using wood to build structures and other things is the fact that it offers a more traditional look. Although it's true that metal can look nice, it doesn't have the same classic look that wood does. Depending on what you are building, you might find that wood will give you the look that you are going for. You will have more customization options for giving wood the look that you want, too, such as by adding stain or paint with ease.

2. It Doesn't Rust or Corrode

You might have always heard that metal is more durable and long-lasting than wood, but this is not the case in every way. You might not have to worry about wood rot or termites when you choose metal, but you do have to worry about rust and corrosion. Luckily, wood does not rust, so you don't have to worry about this issue at all when you choose to build things out of wood.

3. It Can Be More Affordable

Of course, wood comes in different price ranges, and some of it is much more expensive than other types. If you go with inexpensive wood or engineered wood for your project, though, you might find that the cost of building materials is a lot cheaper than if you purchased metal. Naturally, you should compare pricing for different materials to find the one that is right for your project budget.

If you are looking for the right building materials for your upcoming project -- whether you're going to be tackling a small project or if you're going to be building a big structure -- you should definitely check out all of your options. In some cases, you might find that metal is going to be your best choice for a building material. This is not always the case, though, and in many cases, wood is actually the better choice for these reasons.

Teaching Kids About Manufacturing

When it comes down to it, there are a lot of different ways that your life is better than your ancestors. For starters, we have the privilege of living in a society that is incredibly advanced, making it easier to enjoy first-world amenities like air conditioning, cable television, and homes that are safe and comfortable. However, there are other things that people really take for granted, which is why working with your kids to understand industrial and manufacturing concerns is so important. I started chatting with my kids about manufacturing months ago, and it felt good to teach them something about the way the world worked.
